🧠 How to Build a Game Plan Before You Play Pickleball
Most players walk on the court, hit the ball around for a few minutes, and start playing. No plan. No strategy. Just hope. The players who consistently win — at every level — walk on the court with a plan already built. Here is how to build yours in four steps before you ever play a single point.
Why No Plan Costs You Games
Without a game plan you play reactively — you just respond to whatever your opponent does. With a plan you play proactively — you are making things happen instead of surviving them. Reactive players lose to players they should beat. Proactive players win games they have no right to win.
Step 1: Watch the Warm-Up — Identify the Weakness
The warm-up is the most underused scouting opportunity in recreational pickleball. While your opponent is loosening up they are showing you everything. Most players use the warm-up to warm themselves up. Smart players use it to scout the opponent. You can do both at the same time.
During the warm-up, watch for four things:
✅ Which side do they hit fewer shots to? That is the weaker side.
✅ Do they avoid dinking? They struggle at the kitchen.
✅ Do they back up from hard shots? They cannot handle pace.
✅ Do they pop up low balls? Target their feet under pressure.
Two minutes of watching tells you the whole game plan.
Step 2: Pick Your Target — Before the First Point
Based on what you saw in the warm-up, pick one weakness and commit to it before you serve the first ball. Backhand? Go there. Can't handle pace? Drive more. Struggles at the kitchen? Drop it at their feet.
The three most effective targets:
✅ The backhand side, consistently
✅ The feet in the transition zone when they advance
✅ Wide angles to pull them off court
Pick one. Go there on every important point.
❌ Do not change your target every few points when it does not work immediately. Most recreational players take 5 to 6 balls to the same spot before they start to crack. Be patient with your game plan and give it time to work.
Step 3: Decide Your Style — Aggressive or Patient
This is not about your general playing style. It is about your style against this specific opponent. Choosing wrong costs you the match before you hit a ball.
Here is how to decide in under 10 seconds:
➡️ Does this player make a lot of errors on their own? If yes — be patient and let them beat themselves.
➡️ If no — be aggressive and make things happen.
✅ Be aggressive when your opponent is inconsistent — take the kitchen early, speed up often, dictate the pace
✅ Be patient when your opponent is a hard hitter or banger — reset everything, neutralize their pace, wait for the right ball
Match your style to their weakness, not your preference.
Step 4: Have a Reset Plan — When the Game Plan Stops Working
At some point your opponent adjusts, you go down a few points, and everything feels wrong. Smart players have a reset plan ready before this happens.
When the plan stops working, do three things in order:
✅ Go back to basics — high percentage shots only, no hero shots
✅ Switch your target — if the backhand was not working, go to the feet instead
✅ Change your pace — if you have been aggressive go patient, if you have been patient try one aggressive sequence
❌ The biggest mistake when things go wrong is abandoning the entire plan and just reacting. That is how you go from down 3 to down 9. Small adjustments keep you in the match. Panic takes you out of it.
🏁 The Bottom Line
Your complete pre-match routine in four steps: scout the weakness during warm-up, pick your target before point one, decide your style based on their tendencies, and have your reset plan ready. Do all four and you will walk on that court with more confidence than you have ever had.
Because you have a plan.

The Secret to a Better Return of Serve🏓 How to Return Every Spin in Pickleball
Spin is one of the most frustrating things to deal with in pickleball — especially when you are not sure what you are looking at. The good news is that once you understand how spin works and apply one simple formula, you can handle it every time.
The Two Spins You Will Face
Slice (Backspin)
Slice comes from a high-to-low swing path — think 12 o'clock down to 6 o'clock. The ball stays low after it bounces and curves based on which direction the opponent swings. A right-handed forehand slice, for example, curves to the right. When you see a high-to-low swing, expect the ball to stay low and move.
Topspin
Topspin comes from brushing up the back of the ball — 6 o'clock up to 12 o'clock. After the bounce, the ball kicks up aggressively and accelerates into your body. When you see that low-to-high brushing motion, get ready for a ball that jumps.
The Formula: Three Steps to Handle Any Spin
Step 1: Go to the Ball
❌ Do not wait for the ball to come to you
✅ Move forward and intercept it early — before the spin has a chance to fully break or kick up
The longer the ball travels, the more the spin takes effect. Get to it early and you neutralize most of the problem before it starts.
Step 2: Stay Down
✅ Keep your head down and your body moving forward through the shot
✅ Maintain a low center of gravity all the way through contact
❌ Coming up through the shot is what causes pop-ups on spin balls — the spin grabs your paddle and sends the ball upward. Stay down and swing forward to counteract it.
Step 3: Play With Spin
✅ Return at about 70% power — not full pace
✅ Apply your own topspin by brushing up the back of the ball on the return
❌ Do not try to crush a spin ball. When you swing too hard at spin, you lose control. Controlled topspin at 70% gives you far better results than a full-power flat shot.
🏁 The Bottom Line
Think of it as stop, drop, and roll: move forward to the ball, stay low through the shot, and control your power with your own topspin. Do all three and spin goes from your opponents best weapon to something you handle with confidence.
