You Need to Hit Topspin on 80% of Your Shots
Topspin isn’t optional in pickleball — it’s essential.
You should be hitting topspin on roughly 80% of your shots, and here’s why.
Reason #1: The Court Is Short & The Net Is High
Pickleball courts are compact and the net sits relatively high, which means flat shots have very little margin. A completely flat ball might sail long, but that same shot with topspin will dip back into the court.
Topspin gives you safety and consistency. It allows you to swing freely while still keeping the ball in play — especially on deep serves and returns where the bounce rule is involved.
Reason #2: Topspin Unlocks Power
There’s a ceiling to how hard you can hit the ball without spin. Once you reach that limit, swinging harder just leads to errors.
Topspin raises that ceiling.
By using topspin, gravity helps pull the ball down into the court, allowing you to hit harder without losing control. If you want to reach the next power threshold in your game, topspin isn’t optional — it’s required.
Did you know?
No ball is ever truly 100% flat. Every shot has some amount of spin — the question is whether you’re controlling it or letting it happen randomly.
Reason #3: Topspin Controls Your Opponent
Topspin isn’t just about you — it’s about what it does to your opponent.
When a topspin ball lands, it kicks up, forcing opponents to move back, get uncomfortable, or contact the ball late. When you aim topspin shots at your opponent’s feet, the ball drops quickly and forces them to hit up instead of down.
And here’s the key rule of pickleball:
Above the net = aggressive
Below the net = defensive
Any time your opponent makes contact below the net, even if they don’t pop the ball up, the shot is neutralized. That’s how you take control of rallies.
You can apply topspin on:
Drives
Dinks
Drops
Roll volleys
Any time you push your opponent back or force them to hit up, you create opportunities to move forward, apply pressure, and win points.
Bottom Line
Topspin keeps the ball in, unlocks safe power, and puts constant pressure on your opponent.
If you want more consistency, more depth, and more control over rallies — topspin needs to be a core part of your game.

👟Drill of the Week: Topspin DIY Tutorial
Purpose:
To learn the proper low-to-high motion for topspin while gradually introducing range, control, and power.
How It Works:
Start close and simple, then slowly build distance and speed.
Step 1: Hold the ball in your hand and rehearse a low-to-high swing path, feeling the brushing motion.
Step 2: Roll the ball up and over the net using that same low-to-high motion.
Step 3: From your knees, lift the ball with topspin and hit it softly into the kitchen.
Step 4: Stand up and step backward after each successful shot while still aiming to land the ball in the kitchen.
Step 5: Hit topspin shots from farther back, continuing to aim into the kitchen.
Step 6: Transition to full topspin drives from the baseline.
Why It Works:
This drill teaches topspin progressively — starting with feel and technique, then adding distance and power — so your swing stays relaxed, controlled, and repeatable instead of forced.

So… Why Are You Popping Your Dinks Up?
Before we answer that question, we need to understand why the dink matters.
The purpose of a dink is simple: to neutralize your opponent. A successful dink forces your opponent to hit up over the net instead of down into the court. And the more you force opponents to hit up rather than down, the more points you will win.
This is also why so many players struggle against “bangers.” Bangers are effective because they’re attacking balls above net height. If you force that same player to hit from below the net, their power disappears. If they try to swing hard anyway, the ball usually goes long or into the net.
The Mindset That Instantly Fixes Pop-Ups
Beyond technique, the fastest way to pop up fewer dinks is changing your mindset.
At the kitchen line, tell yourself:
“I can dink forever.”
The moment you think “Don’t pop this up”, you’re already in trouble. Your body tightens, your swing changes, and… pop-up.
Instead, approach dinking with calm confidence — just like stepping into an ice bath. If you tense up, it feels worse. If you stay present and relaxed, it becomes manageable.
Believe you can dink one more ball than your opponent — because when you do, they’re the ones who crack first.
