How To Instantly Get Better

Players think that in order to get better they need:

• Thousands of hours of practice

• A better paddle

• Better competition

• Better matches

Yes — all of those things can help.

But those are things you don’t currently have.

What about your current skill level?

Your current paddle?

Your current athletic ability?

How do you improve right now — with what you already have?

It’s simple. Your mindset.

1. “Bad Shots” Aren’t Bad Shots Anymore

Everyone will:

• Pop up a drop

• Hit a serve too short

• Miss an easy putaway

• Have a partner pop up a dink

That’s not a disaster.

That’s pickleball.

Instead of thinking “that was terrible,” think:

“Now what?”

If you pop up a drop — don’t check out. Stay back and reset.

If your partner pops up a dink — take a few steps back and prepare to defend.

If you hit a short serve — anticipate your opponent getting to the kitchen and prepare for the next ball.

We’re not quitting on points anymore.

We’re adjusting. Turn Lemons →to lemonade.

2. Have a Short Memory

In pickleball, you must have a short memory.

Miss a shot? Move on.

Former Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Champion Avonte Maddox said it perfectly:

“It’s football. You play corner, you’re not perfect. Certain things are going to happen. It’s all about how short your memory is.”

Elite athletes expect mistakes.

What separates them is how they respond on the next play.

The next point is the only one that matters.

3. Hit. The. Ball. In.

If the ball is out it is 100% your opponent’s point.

No debate.

Too many players:

• Keep drops too low and hit the net

• Try to pinpoint winners

• Overswing on drives

• Aim for perfect instead of playable

Stop handing your opponent points like a holiday gift.

Make them hit another ball.

How many times have you missed an easy ball?

Exactly.

If the ball goes in the net or long — you gave them the point.

If you make them hit one more ball?

They might miss.

And that’s how you win more.

Bottom Line

You don’t need:

More power.

More winners.

More perfection.

You need:

Fewer emotional reactions.

Fewer forced errors.

More composure.

Improve your mindset — and you improve your results immediately.

How To Return Slice & Topspin

Many players struggle returning slice and topspin for one simple reason:

They let the ball come to them.

The longer you wait, the more the ball:

• Curves

• Dips

• Skids

• Jumps

That’s when spin starts to feel “unpredictable.”

The solution?

Take time away from the ball.

To return slice and topspin consistently, follow these three steps:

1. Move Up Early

Don’t wait. Close the space and meet the ball before it fully reacts off the bounce.

2. Get Low With Your Legs

Bend your knees to stabilize contact. If you stay tall, the spin will move you. If you get low, you control it.

3. Finish Forward

Swing through the ball and send it deep. A forward finish neutralizes spin and keeps you from popping the ball up.

Move up.

Get low.

Finish forward.

Do those three things, and heavy slice and topspin won’t feel intimidating anymore — they’ll feel manageable.
