Let’s Talk About Your Pickleball Game…🎯

🔥 How To Hit Topspin in Pickleball

If you want more power, more consistency, and more control in pickleball…

You need to learn topspin.

Topspin is one of the biggest differences between beginner and advanced players because it allows you to hit aggressively while still keeping the ball in the court.

Why Topspin Matters

Think of topspin as an insurance policy.

The downward rotation of the ball helps the shot dip back into the court, allowing you to:

• Hit harder with more margin
• Keep drives lower
• Hit deeper serves
• Make volleys and speed-ups more aggressive

The more topspin you create, the more confidence you can swing with.

The Secret to Creating Topspin

Topspin comes from:

➡️ Brushing up the back of the ball
➡️ Swinging from low to high
➡️ Creating upward acceleration through contact

Think of your paddle moving from:

🕕 6 o’clock → 12 o’clock

3 Keys to Better Topspin

1. Loosen Your Grip

Most players grip the paddle way too tight.

When your grip is tight:

• The paddle tip can’t drop
• The wrist becomes stiff
• You lose spin potential

A looser grip allows the paddle to naturally get below the ball and generate upward rotation.

2. Feel the “Weighted Paddle Tip”

Imagine the tip of your paddle is weighted.

This helps you:

➡️ Drop the paddle head below the ball
➡️ Create the proper low-to-high swing path

Without this drop, players tend to swing too flat.

3. Accelerate Through the Ball

One of the biggest mistakes players make is slowing down their swing because they’re afraid of missing.

But here’s the truth:

➡️ Acceleration creates rotation

The more you accelerate upward through contact, the more topspin you create.

If you struggle keeping the ball in:

❌ Don’t slow down your swing
✅ Focus on your follow-through

Applying Topspin to Every Shot

Serves & Drives

• Drop the paddle tip
• Point the butt cap toward the target
• Finish up and over your shoulder

Dinks & Volleys

• Keep the paddle out in front
• Point the butt cap upward
• Use your legs to get low and stay balanced

The Bottom Line

Topspin is what allows advanced players to:

• Swing faster
• Hit with confidence
• Control the ball under pressure

Brush up the back of the ball.
Loosen your grip.
Accelerate through contact.

Master topspin — and your entire game changes.

🧠 Stop Trying to Hit Hard — Start Playing Smart

One of the biggest misconceptions in pickleball is that power wins points.

It doesn’t.

At higher levels, players don’t win because they hit harder — they win because they place the ball better.

Most players lose points because they force offense too early. They try to speed balls up that aren’t attackable, go for low-percentage winners, and rush points instead of building them.

The best players do the opposite.

They stay patient, move their opponents around the court, and wait for the right opportunity to attack.

At the kitchen, the goal is not to hit winners from impossible positions. The goal is to create openings. One of the easiest ways to do this is by moving your opponent side to side. Pull them to their left foot, then their right foot. The more they move, the more likely they are to lose balance, pop the ball up, or leave space open for an attack.

The same concept applies in the transition zone. Instead of trying to blast the ball through your opponent, focus on keeping the ball low and aiming at their feet. A low ball forces your opponent to hit up, slowing the point down and giving you time to move forward.

Another major key is understanding court geometry. There is often more space available in the transition zone than at the kitchen line. Hitting behind your opponent or into open lanes can be far more effective than simply hitting harder.

If you want to improve this part of your game, practice with intention. Drills like “left foot, right foot,” down-the-line vs. crosscourt patterns, and alternating middle and wide dinks help train strategic placement and decision-making.

The biggest shift players need to make is this:

➡️ Stop trying to win points immediately
➡️ Start building points strategically

Slow the game down. Move your opponent. Create openings. Then attack the high ball when you earn it.

That’s how high-level pickleball is played.
